I wonder if this pastoral provision were on offer in the '40s, whether Tolkien's wife Edith would have remained Catholic. Finding Confession irksome (don't we all) and other things, ''arrangements'' were made for her to ''go back'' to her local Anglican church - a most grievous thing in Tolkien's life. I actually think this was because of poor catechesis. The priest who instructed her in the faith in Worcester (I can't remember his name) was not a very erudite man. But such things can never be known, and who now knows the secret counsels and griefs of that strange mind, who in the early days of their marriage, accompanied Tolkien gladly to Mass and Benediction.
